This one-day workshop offers an in-depth introduction to hominin facial reconstruction, blending forensic anthropology with artistry. Participants will learn how to identify sex, age, and health indicators from the skull and apply this knowledge to create a scientifically grounded likeness of Homo heidelbergensis. The workshop will also cover specialized wax modeling techniques essential to this unique art. Taking place on February 21st, 2025, at the Gordon Museum, the course is led by Catherine Bone, a PhD researcher in hominin facial reconstructions using Geometric Morphometrics, and is offered by the Medical Artists’ Education Trust.

The participants shall be provided with 3D print of a Homo heidelbergensis skull and mandible which is included in the cost of the ticket

  • 10:00 am – 10:30 am – Please arrive at the Gordon Museum, (map will be provided)
  • 10:30 am – 10:40 am – Introduction to the basics of working in wax
  • 10:40 am- 13:00 pm – Ligaments and deep muscles
  • 13:00 pm -14:00 pm – Lunch break
  • 14:00 pm – 16:30 pm- Superficial muscles and skin
  • 16:30 pm – 17: 00 pm – Head exhibition and tidy up

A the end of the day you can take home your sculpture and finesse it if you wish

All materias and hand outs will be provided on the day.
